I thought Scharn was better at angling herself towards the enemy but not "front on" like Tirpitz. Use her speed to either stay at range and dodge enemy battleships' shells, or press into close range to allow her secondaries - which become extremely powerful with a full secondary build commander and module setup - and torpedoes to come into play, as well as enabling her 280mm guns to be able to punch through the belt or casemate armor of tough BB's. While Scharnhorst has superior frontal armor and citadel armor, her side armor is weak enough to take devastating damage from enemy battleship salvos. She can also utilize her superior armor to deflect deadly salvos and tank for the team. If forced to go toe-to-toe with another battleship, she must use her superior speed to control the engagement. Out of 1968 crewmen, only 36 survived. While unable to withstand mid-range, broadside to broadside engagements with other battleships, Scharnhorst performs very well as a cruiser hunter, destroyer killer, and at harassing distracted battleships. Putting up a valiant fight against hopeless odds, the Scharnhorst was finally sunk after sustaining 15 torpedo hits. This video traces the early history of the ship, from the launch and sea trials to the dramatic dash through the English Channel back to Germany in 1942.Īfter the loss of her sister ship Gneisenau, the good fortunes of the Scharnhorst ran out while intercepting a Murmansk bound Allied convoy in December 1943, the Scharnhorst was attacked by two British warship groups. A historical documentary series tracing the history of this famous German battleship with extensive use of archive footage and exclusive interviews with former crew members.
